Professor of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences IPB, Prof. Dr. dr Sri Budiarti, who is also the lecturer of Department of Biology, Division of Microbiology IPB, delivered her scientific speech at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Economy and Management IPB, Saturday, 11 January 2019.
Prof. Sri Budiarti, in her Scientific Oration entitled “The Strategy to Deal with the Infection of Antibiotics Resistant Bacteria”, stated that: antibiotics resistance in some pathogenic bacteria is one of the big problems in the world which caused high mortality and economic losses, especially in several developing countries. Therefore, an effective strategy is necessary to solve that problem.
She continued, along with the development of the vaccine, the bacteriophage is considered as a good alternative to inhibit the infection of multiple antibiotics resistant bacteria. Prof. Sri and her team have successfully isolated and characterized some potential lytic bacteriophages which could lysis specific pathogenic bacteria, including Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC), Uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC), Photobacterium damsaleae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella spp.
In the future, the lytic bacteriophage could be developed as a cocktail or consortium to cure infectious diseases.
