IPB Biology Lecturer Shares Post-Mining Land Research Experience at the 12th Best University in the World

Tuesday, January 27, 2026, Hirmas Fuady Putra, Ph.D., lecturer in the Ecology and Plant Resources Division, Department of Biology, accepted an invitation from the Asian School of Environment (ASE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, to be the sole speaker at the ASE/EOS Seminar Series. This seminar is held regularly by NTU, inviting scientists from various countries to share their knowledge, research insights, and collaboration opportunities. Participants included ASE NTU lecturers, researchers, and students, both offline and online.

On this occasion, Dr. Hirmas explained his 13 years of experience researching post-tin mining land on Belitung Island, Bangka Belitung Islands Province, Indonesia. In his presentation, he outlined several stages of land restoration efforts, including assessing the condition of the land, identifying factors contributing of land degradation, and evaluating the results of revegetation experiments using an integrative approach. In his lecture, Dr. Hirmas revealed that his latest research findings have been published in several Q1 articles in top-tier international journals over the past two years. Furthermore, related research is still being developed to obtain the best formulation of tin post-mining land restoration strategies in line with current climate challenges.

After the presentation, Dr. Hirmas invited NTU colleagues in attendance to ask questions and discuss potential research collaborations. According to him, after the discussion, several NTU professors requested research collaboration with IPB to develop this field of research with IPB in the future. Follow-up will be carried out immediately, which is expected to not only provide access to world-class research facilities but also scholarship opportunities for IPB students, especially those from the Department of Biology, to continue their studies at NTU, Singapore.
