Department of Biology of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences participated as organizer of an event named One Day Lecture at FMIPA IPB (Sehari Kuliah di FMIPA IPB) on Saturday, 19 August 2017. The department and 7 departments of FMIPA work together to organize the event that is one of the serial activities for the 35th Anniversary of FMIPA IPB. The event that leads by Dr. Ir. Ence Darmo Jaya Supena M.Si. was successfully invited a total of 2,300 high school students from Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, Sukabumi, and Cianjur (Jababodetabek-Suci) to experience one day life as IPB student. During the event, high school students have divided into some groups and attended some classes for lectures and did or observed the laboratory practice works as regularly practiced by IPB regular students. They also have given a speech about IPB and FMIPA in the class. The whole event has taken place at Common Class Room, IPB.
Prof. Dr. Ir. Antonius Suwanto M.Sc., Dr. Berry Juliandi M.Si., Dr. Ir. Iman Rusmana M.Si., and Prof. Dr. Ir. Suharsono DEA of the Department of Biology gave the student opportunity to hear their lecture. The lecture consists of various topics, i.e., microbiology, plant genetic, and zoology. The lecture session followed by a discussion between student and speaker. The student seems attracted to discuss various topics that they never learn in the school.
After the lecture, the student experienced how the laboratory practice work. The practice guided by Department of Biology Undergraduate and Graduate students and supervised by Ivan Permana Putra M.Si., Mafrikhul Muttaqin M.Si., Dr Nina Ratna Djuita S.Si. M.Si., Dr. Rika Indri Astuti S.Si. M.Si., Dr Sri Listiyowati MSi., Ir. Tri Heru Widarto M.Sc., and Dr. Dra. Yohana Cecilia S. M.Si. The student learned about genome DNA extraction, live moving chloroplast observation, live Paramecium activity observation, and basic fungi introduction. “It’s exciting to see the unseen Paramecium eat their food in the big screen”, a student from Sukabumi commented about Paramecium observation. Another student from Jakarta said that it was the first time that he sees the DNA (crude extract) in real life. He said that he will try to extract the onion DNA as he observed in the event.
